    Sample size calculator

    For: Anyone writing a synopsis or answering a committee's query about numbers

    The four designs most postgraduate theses use — estimating a prevalence, comparing two means, comparing two proportions and diagnostic accuracy — plus correlation. It shows the formula, the values substituted into it, and the arithmetic, so you can defend the number rather than only quote it.

    What it gives you

    • The required n, per group and in total, rounded up
    • Attrition applied, so the figure you write is the figure you recruit to
    • A methods sentence you can paste into your synopsis, with your own citation to fill in
    • The questions an examiner tends to ask about it

  2. Tool 02

    DNB and DrNB deadline planner

    For: NBEMS trainees, from the day they join

    Give it your joining date and it returns the dated timeline NBEMS publishes[2]: the protocol with ethics approval inside 180 days, data collection complete by 24 months, the thesis at 26 months, and which examination cut-off that falls before. Planning milestones we suggest are marked separately from the rules NBEMS sets.

    What it gives you

    • Every statutory date, with how far away it is in plain words
    • Which examination cut-off your submission date falls before, and the margin
    • A calendar file for the statutory dates
    • A plain dated list you can paste anywhere

What they are not

Read this first

A planning aid, not an authority

A calculator applies a formula to the values you give it. It cannot tell you whether those values are the right ones, and that is the part an examiner asks about. Where a tool needs an assumed figure — a prevalence, a standard deviation, a difference worth detecting — it has to come from published work that you cite, and the citation is yours to supply.

The deadline planner reproduces dates NBEMS publishes[2]. NBEMS may revise them, and your own institution may set something stricter. Confirm against the current circular and your programme before you rely on any date here.

Neither tool involves us. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, nothing is stored, and no result here has been approved by anyone. Your guide and your institution decide.
